Rory McIlroy's thrilling victory at The Masters last month set up some compelling storylines for the second major of the season, the 2025 PGA Championship, which will be played this week at Quail Hollow in Charlotte, North Carolina.

McIlroy completed the career grand slam with his win at Augusta. If he wins again this week, he'll be halfway to a true grand slam. McIlroy has fared well at Quail Hollow throughout his career, having won four tournaments there. It's a course that favors big hitters — right up McIlroy's alley.

But McIlroy isn't even the favorite this week. That would be Scottie Scheffler, the No. 1 player in the world. Scheffler cruised to an eight-shot victory at his most recent event, the CJ Cup Byron Nelson.

Will golf fans be treated to a duel between McIlroy and Scheffler? Or will other top players intervene? Defending PGA champ Xander Schauffele is certainly capable of repeating. Justin Thomas and Ludvig Aberg have been hot lately. LIV Tour star Bryson DeChambeau has been frisky in recent majors, and other LIV players — Jon Rahm, Brooks Koepka, Tyrrell Hatton and others — could contend.

Course History

Will Zalatoris has not played well at Quail Hollow in two appearances at the Wells Fargo Championship - a 60th-place finish in 2024 and missed the cut in 2023. He logged a T-8 finish at the 2021 PGA Championship and a runner-up finish at the 2022 PGA Championship, before returning from injury with a pedestrian T-43 finish at Valhalla in 2024.

Recent Form

Zalatoris has struggled to get going in 2025. He's only logged one top-20 finish, which came at The American Express back in mid-January. He missed the cut at The Masters and had a T-54 finish at the Truist Championship this past weekend. He ranks 159th in SG: Putting and 153rd in scrambling.

Betting Outlook: 2025 PGA Championship Predictions

It's been tough to watch Zalatoris struggle, knowing he was contending in big fields earlier in his PGA Tour career before undergoing back surgery in April 2023.

Zalatoris has been terrible at putting and scrambling when missing greens in regulation. He is still in the top-20 in SG: Approach and proximity, but his flat stick is too bad to warrant an outright bet at 130-1 odds.
